He had lost. But the word held no bitterness to it - he smiled. He had lost and he could hear his teammates cry out in frustration and disbelief. But he smiled. Finally he had been set free.
Freed of his own arrogance, his fear of not being the best, his inability of letting go something he was good at but didn't love doing. He was free to start over from the beginning.
And so his loss - to him - was a victory all over.
